Did you know over 100 million animals are poisoned, blinded, and killed every year in the United States in outdated product tests for cosmetics, personal-care products, household-cleaning products, and even fruit juices? It is said that every three seconds an animal dies while being held in laboratories. Animals are living creatures, who deserve to be more than just a science experiment. Animal experimentation should not be allowed. Whether it is called animal testing, animal experimentation or animal research, it refers to the experimentation carried out on animals. The AWA has authority over animals in laboratories, animal exhibitors, dealers who sell animals to research laboratories, dog and cat breeders, animal carriers, intermed iate handlers, circuses, zoos, puppy roadside menageries, mills, and transporters of animals, including any alive or dead, nonhuman primate, cat, dog, guinea pig, rabbit, hamster, and other warm-blooded animals. However, there are many exemptions to the Animal Welfare Act, including the care and treatment of animals in state and county fairs, retail pet stores, rodeos, livestock shows, purebred cat and dog shows and fairs or exhibitions that are expecting to advance in agricultural sciences and arts. The AWA also excludes, cold-blooded animals, mice bred for research, and rats, which comprise around 95% of the animals used in research. The Animal Welfare Act requires all animal dealers to be officially licensed and registered as well as accountable to any monitoring done by Federal regulators. These groups can receive suspension of their license if they violate any of the arrangements found in the Animal Welfare Act and can also be imprisonment a maximum of one year along with by a fine of $1,000.
